MANILA, Philippines — The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) installed its first pelletizer on Thursday and activated a brick-making facility, saying it will reduce solid waste in waterways, which usually ends up in pumping stations.

At the inauguration ceremony of the Vitas Pumping Station in Tondo, Manila, MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos stated that these facilities not only reduce waste, but also extend the life of the landfill. He explained that the granulator and brick making facilities approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology (DOST) will collect biological waste and plastics from the pumping station and convert them into by-products such as bricks, ecological hollow blocks, ecological concrete barriers, and biological waste composting materials.

"I earnestly hope that through our actions under the Metro Manila Flood Management Project, we will be able to reduce the risks to vulnerable communities due to flooding and excessive waste generation," Abalos said.

Abalos said that the installation of the above facilities will avoid the damage to the pumping station caused by the dumping of garbage on the watercourse.

He also vowed to continue to work with foreign and local stakeholders to ensure that all efforts on the project can continue.

The chairman of MMDA stated that the collected waste will first be disinfected and then preliminary sorted by personnel. The sorted waste will be loaded on the inclined belt conveyor for final sorting and separation.

He explained that the biodegradable and plastic waste will be pelletized on the biological waste pelletizer equipment, while the glass material will be crushed by the bottle crusher.

Abalos added that biodegradable waste will be composted or turned into charcoal blocks, while plastic and glass materials will be processed into bricks, hollow blocks or concrete barriers. Liezelle Soriano Roy, INQUIRER.net intern
